Cheap Wine (and a three day growth)

Post by Bob Connor » Thu May 08, 2008 10:04 pm

As some of you are aware I'm quite partial to a drop of red wine on the odd occaison.

In the last month or so Dave and I have been availing ourselves of the services of Grays Online Auctions and getting bottles of red that usually retail for $20-40 for between $5-12 delivered.

If you're really keen they're flogging bottles of Grange every now and then but it's still in the $3-600 range. Out of my league, but there are some bloody good bargains to be had if you have a sniff about.

I got some cleanskins of Pemberton Shiraz (Margaret River) today that will cost about $4.50 landed. At that price I don't mind if it's crap and it's still probably better than marinating the steak with Jacob's Creek. :) Mind you I've never had anything but superb wines coming out of that region.

I figure if I can reduce the booze budget I can re-allocate it to the tonewood budget and still maintain the same levels of insobriety

It's worth a look if you want to get a bit of wine down for a cellar without breaking the bank.

Thanks for the tip Bob. There's not much that the wife and I like more than a bottle of good wine. There's something I do like more, but I'm not allowed to have it much anymore. :?

Is the price that is listed per case?

The price on the auction site is per case.

They do charge a buyers premium which is about 15% but it still works out at a third to a half of what you would pay in a bottleshop even after you pay postage.
