Recognise this one?

Post by Peter Young » Mon Aug 01, 2011 11:37 am

Hello All

This guitar turned up at our Saturday swarm. The guy that owns it got it from the local dump and has had it nicely restored. Anybody know anything of these guitars and their history in Oz? We have searched inside and cannot find any info other than what is on the patch.

The patch says made in America and distributed in Sydney ... sorry the photo is not clearer. Looks like some sort of American oak ....

Probably made in Chicago between the turn of the century and the 30s by Lyon & Healy, Regal or Harmony, and imported by Alberts who have been round for 120 years.

Could I get better look at the fret board inlay please Pete, it looks like Oscar Schmidt from this angle. Graham may be right too it could be Lyon and Healy(washburn) or maybe Stromberg Voisinet. Seems there were heaps of Chicago makers making un-labelled guitars for sale by distributors.

Yep, that helps those are typical high end "Stella" or "Sovereign" Oscar Schmidt fret board inlay. Most likely made in the 20's in New Jersey. Low end ones had birch tops as well as back and sides and higher end had spruce tops, your looks like it is somewhere in between low and high with its high end inlay and low end top wood.
