semi hemispherical fretting
Re: semi hemispherical fretting
Thanks Nigel.
Who was the guy a few years back who tried to claim semi hemispherical fretting as his own? I believe there were some legal threats made at the time.

Great instructional video Nigel! Your method will help me on my next guitar build when I use the grinding wheel and work the the process to and hopefully improve the quality and finish of the hemispheric fret board.

No idea. I thought Harry Fleishman came up with it. Least he told me he did.

Discussed here. The guy involved briefly joined the forum but didn't stay long

Be warned the above quoted thread contains a healthy dose of p*ss taking and robust Aussie humour.

Re: semi hemispherical fretting
Recently, I have installed Hemi Spherical shaped frets onto a fretboard. The fretboard is attached to the bolt on neck. I created a Measuring Template for measuring the lengths of the Hemi Spherical frets. The installation onto the fretboard was achieved with an even 0.5mm offset from the outer edges of the fretboard. The installation involved:
- Measuring the outside fretboard widths frets 1 to 18 with a veneer.
- Calculating the arc widths and arc lengths using this link. https://www.handymath.com/cgi-bin/arc18 ... bmit=Entry
- Using my computer to draw the Measuring Template and printing a copy of the Measuring Template.
- Measuring the fret wire to be cut for each fret using the Measuring Templated Drawings
- Cutting the tangs to the required offset.
- Shaping the Hemi Spherical fret ends on the grind wheel.
This took around four and half hours to cut and shape the Hemi Spherical frets. The fret ends were then polished and installed onto the fretboard. See photos below.
