Burdekin Plum

Post by Taffy Evans » Sun Jul 27, 2008 7:42 pm

A couple of months back James asked about a guitar I had built using a timber found in this area, Burdekin Plum.

It gets its name of course from the Burdekin River here in north Queensland, just 20km from my workshop, where it grows along the banks. It also grows in many other areas too, even in sand dunes. It is a source of bush tucker. The timber is heavy and dense and has a beautiful grain and rich reddish colour.
I got mine from a guy who cut it down in his back yard, it had been promised to wood turners, but I managed to get a piece. It was not very big but it took two of us to roll the log to the trailer to get it home.

I did not get a lot of usable timber from it and to get the size for these guitars I had to join four pieces.
I have only used it on two solid body guitars so far, one is shown here, “Tigerâ€

Very nice Taff... I suspect the only way to get hold of it before the wood turners is to stake out a tree marked for removal and shoot every wood turner that comes near. The bit I had a few years back was darker with bold dark swirls. I suspect it would be very close to BZ Rosewood as a guitar timber... just harder to get hold of.

Cheers
James

It's lovely looking wood Taffy.

Always seems to be the nice stuff that's in short supply.
