Pretyy much the same thing as hard shellac, which you can get locally.

Reading a few comments from people who have french polished with Royal Lac I get the impression the similarities to hard shellac include an early version of the product that grazed before the product was modified

LMI is on-selling it from another supplier. You can get it elsewhere.
This place in San Diego says they will ship "anywhere in this world".

I got given a secret family recipe when I was in Canada a few years ago. Add 10% ea of Mastic and Gum Sandarac to your flakes when dissolving them. What all is liquid bring the mix to the boil for a few minutes, three times. Then let it cool, dilute and proceed as usual. This recipe also appears on the DelCamp Classical Guitar Forum so Im not going to have the clan after me…. I hope. It is used in high end classical and steel string guitars. No need to import liquids.
make mine fifths........

I checked out the website and looked at the instructional videos using Royal Lacquer. I have no experience with French Polishing methods and thought theses videos were very helpful. This has encouraged me to try out hard shellac as an alternative to nitro lacquer.Mark McLean wrote: ↑Tue Nov 01, 2022 9:26 pmLMI is on-selling it from another supplier. You can get it elsewhere.

Great Wayne. I haven't used it but would be keen to hear what you think of it once you have had a go.

It is not really a secret. That recipe has been around for a very long time. I used it around 20 years ago. It works nicely, and is a bit easier to french polish than straight shellac, but is nothing like hard shellac or royal lac.I got given a secret family recipe when I was in Canada a few years ago. Mark I had a closer look at the Royal Lac website and a quart container in Blond was $71.00 US and has shipping restriction. It can only be shipped to the 48 states.Mark McLean wrote: ↑Wed Nov 02, 2022 3:55 pmGreat Wayne. I haven't used it but would be keen to hear what you think of it once you have had a go.
Need to look around locally. I noticed that 'Carbatec' and 'Beaut Polishes' sell Hard Shellac. See pdf attachment.

I get my shellac and hardener/plasticizer separately from Restorers Choice and mix up the hard shellac myself. Not sure why but I've had better results with the RS HS than The Ubeaut ready mixed product.WJ Guitars wrote: ↑Fri Nov 04, 2022 10:43 amNeed to look around locally. Thanks Martin for your experienced advised regarding hard shellac. I will keep it in mind if I try out this type of finishing instead of spraying nitro lacquer that I currently use for finishing.kiwigeo wrote: ↑Fri Nov 04, 2022 11:40 amI get my shellac and hardener/plasticizer separately from Restorers Choice and mix up the hard shellac myself.
