Spindle switch
Spindle switch
The switch is buggered on my spindle moulder - it'll only go in reverse. That is fine, as its the direction I use the most but it is handy to have forward too. Hare and Forbes don't stock spares for this model anymore, so was wondering if I could use this:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/312856874829?
Model: Q5-15
Insulation voltage: 380V
Heating current: 15A
Rated current: 7A
Rated power: 3KW (Ue=380V) 1.7KW (Ue=220V)
Protection level: IP44
Certification: 3C
My machine is single phase, 240V 15A.
I know nothing about electrics.
Any suggestions?

Re: Spindle switch
I'm a Geologist not an electrician but the 1.7Kw rating at 220volts equates to a current of 7A. Your machine is rated at 15A so the switch I don't think will cut the mustard.

I'd try an electrician. No matter how expensive he is, it's cheaper than burning your workshop down.

Yes, they don't sell it, hence the post here.kiwigeo wrote: ↑Sat Mar 19, 2022 12:56 pmHave you tried here?: https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/Spare-Parts-Switches

Alot of these machines come out of the same factory in Taiwan/China. Maybe check the switches on Carbatec or Jet etc equivalents? Do you have a circuit diagram of the switch included in the manual?nkforster wrote: ↑Sat Mar 19, 2022 6:29 pmYes, they don't sell it, hence the post here.kiwigeo wrote: ↑Sat Mar 19, 2022 12:56 pmHave you tried here?: https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/Spare-Parts-Switches

Ta, I'm looking at other brands to see if they have them.kiwigeo wrote: ↑Sat Mar 19, 2022 7:02 pmAlot of these machines come out of the same factory in Taiwan/China. No manual, I bought it used, there isn't even a model number stamped on it.

Re: Spindle switch
I happened to see this
Post a photo (or PM me) of the switch/box and the entire machine. It's probably a 3HP, 15amp motor.
I'll see if I can steer you in the right direction for the replacement switch - but you're going to need an electrician to install it.
Cheers.

Very decent of you. Yes, I'll get my sparky to come and swap it out if there is a suitable replacement.
The model is a Hare and Forbes SP-250:

Re: Spindle switch
Ah - I thought that may be the model you were referring to.
It is older so I may not be able to assist, but will certainly check for you. Unfortunately that won't be until next week as I'm away interstate this week. I'll let you know the outcome either way, in due course.
Cheers,
Jeremy.

Re: Spindle switch
Hey Nigel.
Unfortunately not - I've tried every avenue I had available since I've been back in the office, to no avail.
Our records suggest the last purchase of these switches was 15 years ago! They have long since gone, but I physically checked old parts boxes anyway, without luck.
After that I reached out to the manufacturer of that machine in Taiwan to see if one could be ordered specially for you - alas, even the manufacturer no longer makes it, nor has any spares left...
So I'm out of options for you other than to say, it is likely the switch itself is still made, or at least, one equivalent that could be retrofitted. But you would need a machinery electrician to identify a suitable modern equivalent. The only other suggestion would be to remove the switch from the cabinet (ensure it is unplugged!!) and look at two things: one - the switch itself may have a code/part number stamped on it in the back. It likely just looks like a random series of letters/numbers, but a google search for that may find the switch itself as a part available from online parts stores. The second is whether there are any obvious signs of dirty contacts or other obstructions that may have caused it to stop working. Likely dust has got into it and caused it to fail. Something like Deox-It (a contact cleaner) may help, but given the electrical nature, I'd still have an electrician do that and/or assess it.
Sorry I couldn't help further. Good luck.
Jeremy.
