Mahogany wanted
Hi all,
After what seems like forever I’m finally starting my first guitar! Well ive made and inlayed the rosette anyway. Bending sides is still a little while away.
However, I cannot afford to buy a stewmac mahogany neck blank.
Does anyone have some mahogany they would
like to sell me? Would like enough for two or three acoustic necks.
Thanks: Joseph

Re: Mahogany wanted
Hi Joseph,
I don't have any mahogany and I don't think StewMac send mahogany overseas now.
But I have used WA sheoak on a few electric necks with good results, so maybe you could consider that option? It may be a little heavier though. Or you could try for Queensland maple?
I've only built one acoustic so far and I used an American cherry/sheoak/cherry laminated neck on that.
Should be plenty of sheoak down your way.

Re: Mahogany wanted
Ok, thanks Ken.
Was wondering about Sheoak as I love the way finishes so that’s good that it’s stable enough...
But it’s getting difficult to get a nice clean piece.
So is it an issue if it’s twisted a bit from quatersawn to 45 degrees off?

The stone is hard and the drop is small but a hole is made by the constant fall.

Where are you located, I have a tonne of it I need to clear out at bargain price.
Lots of other timber that has to go too.
I’m near Ballarat.

Re: Mahogany wanted
Sort of chasing the mahogany if Im gonna pay for timber as it would suit with the b/s.
But here’s the Sheoak I’ve got. Don’t know if it’s any good for guitar necks but if not I could get some more I suppose...

Re: Mahogany wanted
Freight to WA will cost more than the timber, this is extra heavy Mahogany. High quality stuff.
If you were local to the area I’d have sad swing by.

Re: Mahogany wanted
I can attest to the quality of the wood.
Even extra shipping costs is worth it
I have heaps of chinese mahogany wood suitable for neck blanks, but they pale in comparison to quality of the stuff Allan has

Re: Mahogany wanted
I would be willing to order some if you had couple of pieces big enough to suit making one piece acoustic necks

Re: Mahogany wanted
No, it’d be 2pc if you wanted on the quarter.
The whole cube is flat sawn lengths at body blank thickness ranging from 35mm to a bit over 40mm
It’s the same stuff that sells up in a certain QLD supplier for $380 a body blank, where I’ll be doing it around $100 a blank if people buy enough.
