Learn how to use planes from a luthier who uses them for almost every guitar making operation.
What you learn:
• How planes are supposed to work
• Cutting mechanics
• Effect of chip breaker position and mouth width
• Function of bevel down and bevel up planes
• Low and high angle planes
• Stripping and re-assembling YOUR plane
• Tuning YOUR plane for a specific task
Covers planing of:
• Tops to thickness and a silky surface
• Curly back wood to thickness without tear-out
• Sides to thickness without tear-out
• Centre joints for back and sides

There's no heavy maths like the modal tuning course Martin, but there is some precision set-up for those who want precision results!

I sometimes think I'll have to follow Nigel Forster's example and head south!
However for those of us stuck in the old world I thought I would mention David Charlesworth. He has written books and done DVDs etc and is the expert on tuning up planes and their use in the UK. For anyone starting out with tool use his teachings are incredibly useful. My sharpening expertise, such as it is, came completely from his articles in a UK woodworking magazine.
Anyway enjoy your sessions with Trevor
