A question of aesthetics ?

Talk about musical instrument construction, setup and repair.

A question of aesthetics ?

Post by Stu » Sun Jun 29, 2008 12:23 am

G,day all and sundry.
A thought occurred to me today that most acoustic builds I've seen use the same tonewoods for their backs as their sides.
Is there some sort of reasoning to this other than aesthetics?

I'm mainly a solid/chambered body builder looking at spreading my wings to more advanced techniques (acoustics :D) and wonder why this is?

apologies if this question is null and void !!

cheers, Stu

Cant think of a valid reason not to mix side and back woods.....my preference is to keep them the same but thats purely asthetic.

G,day to you too Stu but it's Saturday here....... :D

Martin is correct and there are no rules here regarding if the sides have to match the back. In fact builders like Harry Flieshman will use two different woods for a top and/or back as well. Howard Klepper will use many woods and multiple woods for a single side.

My guess is that it is aesthetics as you suggested and also simply the legacy of what we are accustomed to seeing. Some of these legacies do not serve us well.

Yep, just looks better to me. Though if you want to see some outstanding joinery of different woods you need to check out Howard Kleeper's creations.
