The last sander I had was one of these:

It was ok, it did the job, not as good as the bigger machine I had before that, but it did what I needed. I've just seen this one:

It looks pretty similar. Anyone got one? Any views?

I have not seen either of theses sander products shown from the links you have prodided. However, an Engineer friend of mine from Orange uses a variety of machinery with good reliable results that have come from 'Hare Forbes'. I have a 'Jet' Oscillating Spindle Sander, Model JBOS-5, cost me around $650.00 and it has proven to be a very good sander.

One of those you get what you pay for things, the one you link is really for hobby stuff, using it on a commercial scale, means it has a very limited life.

That's the one I had first, it was great, but sold it when I went to Germany. For the number of instruments I make, the light one is fine. I had one for two years in Germany and never had an issue with it. It ended up with a pal as part of a deal we did.

I'm just interested to know if anyone owns the second one I posted.

I have got that Scheppach model that you are already famiiar with. Not great, but not bad, and enough for my modest needs. It is hard to imagine that the "Powertec" one is any better - but I can't tell you for sure.

I have to full size cabinet model by Jet. No comparison to the hobby bench top ones.

I also have that Scheppach sander and for my limited usage I am happy with it and never had any problem

Hi Nigel,

Carbatec has their head office in Brisbane and sell a small range of the sanders. I fancy the Jet benchtop one.

I recently had issues with Hare & Forbes when a thicknesser motor mount broke after very few hours usage (under 10).
As the warranty had expired, I had to get Consumer Protection on board (machine 'not fit for purpose') before Machinery House "volunteered" to replace the motor.
I did get satisfaction but I really had to fight for it.

So I advise you, me, and others, to read their reviews prior to purchase.

And I'm sure you are aware that USA imports will be 110 volts.

Another Brisbane machine supplier is Gregory's at Richlands. Talk to Cameron. They don't try to compete with Hare & Forbes or Carbatec so carry better quality gear. Yep, costs a little more.

I don't usually comment or weigh in on this type of statement, but in the interest of fairness and accuracy to the forum members who might read it, I feel I should this time. While this is clearly only an opinion and therefore you are entitled to it, it is one I have to respectfully disagree with.

As an industry insider with many years experience behind me, this is purely a marketing tactic employed - it does not reflect reality accurately. Don't try to compete and carry better quality gear is factually incorrect, not opinion. Just thought I should mention that lest whispers and commentary go unchecked and become unquestioned accepted reality! That happens enough in Luthiery!

Oh and I know Cameron well, having worked with him for many years. He is a good salesman.
