Fretboard Journal #10--Summer issue...my guitar
For those who would like to see how I build acoustic guitars, the Summer issue of Fretboard Journal just came out, and it has a 16 page photo essay following the building of one guitar pretty much all the way through. I'm in there as is my assistant, Matthew Tolley. We built a 15" cutaway mini-jumbo in spectacular cocobolo with a bear claw Sitka top. This one has most of the tricks...flying buttresses, tilting neck, doubled sides, and side sound port. The photography is wonderful. I'm very grateful to Michael Simmons and Jason Verlinde of FBJ for doing this.

I almost hate to say it, but that's one of the simpler operations I do on the pin router. You should see doing the profile outline of the bridges! I work with the pin router and a table router on that one, and the templet is double stick taped to the underside of the bridge. The pin router is spinning clockwise and the table router is spinning anti-clockwise (like you Aussies), so I can conventional cut "down grain" on the points of the bridge.

It is a very nice article, Rick. You are right about the photography, they did you proud on that - although, I have come to expect that of the FBJ. What a fine magazine.

Its not often that a magazine of the quality of the Fretboard Journal comes around. I really hope that it can generate some staying power! I found the article about Rick to be very interesting with his guitars really coming from another direction. The photography brings a good perspective to how small the neck block really is. Thank you for sharing this stuff! I also have to admit that the Chris Thile interview was a facinating read as Chris and David Grisman essentially interviewed each other and I am a big fan of both of their music!
