guitar building / lutherie courses in Australia?
guitar building / lutherie courses in Australia?
Hello. I'm wondering if anyone out there can help please? If this has already been asked / answered, please redirect me. Or if it's on another website, just point me in the right direction.
I'm wondering if anyone has compiled a list of acoustic guitar building courses offered around Australia? I've slowly been digging up possibilities through internet searches, but cannot find a comprehensive list.
I'm living in country NSW (Grenfell), so I'm trying to find a course that is offered as an intensive. So far I've found two: Thomas Lloyd Guitars in VIC and Hancock Guitars in QLD. Each offers a 2-week intensive. However, I'd love to know who else is offering such a course, so I can find the one that's best for me.
Any ideas? If you don't know of a list of courses, but can recommend a course, that's fine too.
Many thanks for your time and help,
Bern Merchant

Cloud Nine Guitars offers courses. It would be a good way to learn something about building and have a bit of a holiday in the tropics.

Don't know of anyone that has taken it, so I'm not much help with feedback.

The Lawrence K Smith web site shows a course available. Don't know anything about the course, but Thirroul is only 2-3 hours drive from Grenfell. http://www.smithguitars.com/Guitar_Maki ... making.htm.

I've done the course at Thomas Lloyd Guitars. You learnt how to make a guitar in a very relaxed atmosphere with around 3 - 4 other students on an historical property in Eltham, Victoria. He has a two week intensive course at the beginning of each year. I know he has had students from interstate and O/S who stay locally during the course. You won't be disappointed.
He has also begun a course which he undertakes in Italy once a year, as a package deal.

Combine a New Zealand holiday with a 3 week guitar building course in Wellington run by Paddy Burgin and Dave Freeman. You get to build a guitar using the spanish method as outlined in Jim William's book. You gtet a choice of building a dreadie, OM or a classical. Class size is usually about 12 people. The course runs every 2-3 years. Next xourse starts jan 2nd 2009. Check out Paddy or Daves websites for details of next course.
