Wood identification?
Wood identification?
I was fortunate enough to be able to salvage this wood from an old wardrobe . It tapped nicely and looks great under finish. I have had differing opinions regarding its identity ranging from Meranti to Queensland Maple. I would appreciate any thoughts some of you more experienced wood lovers might have as to what it might be. Thanks.

Looks like Queensland Maple to me but hard to say for sure without getting my hands on the wood.

Re: Wood identification?
Thanks Martin. It does look quite different from the Qld Maple I have used thus far but definitely has the same sort of colour and sheen under finish. I am in Canberra so if you are nearby am happy to bring it over for you to examine up close.

I am considering driving across later in the year for the international guitar festival so if I still have the guitar will bring it with me.

Re: Wood identification?
I would be thinking blackwood or some other acacia as Bob suggested. Happy to have a look or you could take it down to the Woodworkers Guild in Kambah. Someone there would know. You should get on the local email list for the occasional luthiers Indian meal in Melba. Bruce McCulloch may well be in touch.

Hi Craig
Welcome to the forum at last. Looks like Queensland maple to me. I used some of the off cuts
you gave me to make this baritone uke. Would be happy to take more if you are giving it away
it was a lovely timber to work with. (Yes you are on my list).

Re: Wood identification?
Thanks everyone for your responses .Seems like Qld Maple might be the most likely candidate. As long as she sounds good I'm happy
. Martin thanks for the invite . Would love to catch up when I venture over your way.
Bruce I have a few random pieces left over that you are most welcome to have.

Re: Wood identification?
Nothing like a wood question to get me to pop up , I've been on holidays and ignoring the phone to be with the trees .
My vote is light colour fast grown Blackwood. I've cut mountains of shimmery light colour Blackwood like that out of the Otways . It looks really familiar
All the best

Re: Wood identification?
Thanks Pete. I think this one will remain a mystery for now but regardless of species it is nice old wood
. Just by way of interest the density is around 600kg/m3 and my guess for ghe age of the wardrobe would be 1940's or 1950's.

Re: Wood identification?
Hi Everyone I am no expert by any measure but it looks a lot like Qld Blackwood that I have seen, A friend used to build kitchen cabinets so I was able to compare wood's he was using in the peace's I had for comparison the Qld Blackwood was very much the plain Jane compared to Tasi Blackwood some of the peace's looked more like meranti than blackwood UMM I don't think this has helped has it sorry
