Weissenborn

Hi Folks

I've been asked to build a Weissenborn and in searching around I see some threads in the archive here where people have built them and I also see people were not happy with the standard bracing on most plans so did there own thing. These threads seem a few years old. So any comments on your updated bracing schemes after a few years? Also of course any new (or old) thoughts on building a Weissenborn..

I'm planning something along the lines of a style 4 all Koa with the rope binding so any thoughts on the making of rope binding is appreciated as well.

Assuming that you know how to make the rope binding the only advice I would give is to glue a thin strip 0.4mm of mahogany/Kia on the top and the bottom of the binding strip. When you start to bend the strip around the weissenborn it naturally wants to break into pieces and you end up attaching it 2cm at a time.

Yeah I know the theory of making rope bindings but have never done it so just looking for the practical tips like that, I've heard veneer on one side or both..

I've found a good number of the web posts on building but the ones on this site are the ones that talk about changing the bracing patterns etc so that got my interest.

I've changed the bracing pattern Weissies to reflect my practices with 6 string guitars. I've also used the traditional bracing and the Christmas tree bridge. Both have worked out fine and they are all still in shape after a few years stringing up.

I think Dave White might have done one with really light bracing that bellied up quite a bit but he said it sounded great and for a Weissenborn it doesn't really matter as long as the bridge stays glued on.
