Unbalanced veneer on headstock

Hey fellas,

I'm thinking about putting a veneer on my headstock design where there is a cropped coloured plate that matches the body, and a small section where you can see the wood from the neck.

As 3 tuners will sit on the coloured veneer and 3 will not be on it on the other side, is this likely to cause any issues, tuning or otherwise?

Those sort of tuners have a reasonable amount of tolerance for headstock thickness. As long as the "thin side" still has enough meat for the tuning posts to sit in I can't see that it would cause any sort of problem for tuner function.

No it shouldn't make any difference, the tuner 'height' is determined by the face it screws to which is the back face so all the tuner post heights will still be the same on the front, the tuner bushings will just sit a little lower on the 'unveneered' side of the head stock. Just make sure your headstock isn't so thin on the front face that the securing screw/s pop out through the face!

It can be done without problem, just requires planning - as with all aspects of building.

Conversely to what others have mentioned too, make sure it is also not so thick that you've reduced the amount of tapered shaft where the string wraps - potentially effectively reducing the "angle" of the headstock. You still need adequate break angle over the nut for your strings and enough wraps around the post to stabilise tuning.
