Kerfing- Aus Species?
Hi all
Is anyone out there using something other than the usual suspects for their Kerfing?
A suitable Aus Species would be great
Bunya? Tas Blackwood? Kauri? ................ Paulownia????

Qld Maple!
Interested to here peoples thoughts on Bunya for kerfing? I got cr@ploads of the stuff quartered and big enough for kerfing to last a lifetime.

I use King Billy Pine that is not suitable for soundboards.

Any reason not to use something more dense? I've got a buttload of spotted gum floorboards that I thought of turning into kerfing...
Re: Kerfing- Aus Species?
I've just had good success using QLD Maple for my solid linings.
Bought a slab of it off eBay for $60 and sliced up enough for 10 guitars

I would think that kerfing would be one of the less exacting timbers in the build . Ideally though it's about bend ability ( obviously ) , which links in to long fibres. But then I'd add the species not being too fissile ( easy split along the grain ) as that would help the timber between the kerf from popping out . I like to bend and laminate mine so that's not so crucial as if it's kerfed .
My favourites are the quandongs , silver quandong ( or blue fig ) which is my favourite bracing also . Hard quandong or black olive plum are good too . Anything eleocarpus has been good . Most of the flindersias would suit ( including the qld maple and silver ash mentioned ) Blackwood or silver wattle are just fine too though a bit more fissile .
I've known people to use most anything mid to low density .
