Left over wood
Left over wood
This is not one I did, Nicole (partner), works at the shop with me and Rob.
This is a piece of wood left over from a birds eye maple neck, which she has turned into a pen, and sent to its new owner in South Carolina - America (Nothing to do with our repair business)
Anyone got photo's of some of the stuff they have turned the leftover bits of wood into.
I uploaded it onto our facebook page, pretty chuffed with what she did....

Yeah, this neck pissed me off today so I cut it in half to pull the rod out, however I wrecked the rod by rushing with the bandsaw, so I just threw the lot in the fire!
To answer your question though, I sell my offcuts etc so it's other people that use them to make the pens and what knot. Although I do let people pick through the kindling from time to time, and this crane was a gift to me from an old lady who does hand carving that I give lots of off cuts to. If you look close, you can see it's the shape of the front horns of an electric guitar, she saw a crane in the off cut and here it is!

Re: Left over wood
Hardly an original idea, but this was made from the sound hole cutout and purfling from the first guitar I built.
Most of my off-cuts seem to end up in trim, rosettes or jigs/tools.Fine classical and steel string guitars

I made the top of this "Harlequaster", Tele Thinline from off-cuts of Flame maple (from LP tops), Burl Sheoak (from LP Junior top, which was from off-cuts from a dining table) and American Cherry (from a Resonator build).

Ken that I really like.
As someone who hates wasting any offcuts in the workshop I appreciate the work. But I am also aware of the care and skill that goes into making that sort of patchwork of small pieces into a meaningful form.
The main thing though is that it looks absolutely great! I would love an instrument that looked like that.
