Metalwork Department opened up this month

Seeing as the UK winter is setting in .. I've started up the metal work department of the shed again..This time making a couple of string spacing gauges.

They work a treat. I use mine for laying out the nut on every instrument. Makes the job for students a lot easier too.

I get asked this quite a lot..You have to remember that if you space out the strings at the bass end of the nut you have to cramp up the strings at the treble end ..I don't do this co's finger tips press down on the centre line of the string..But!! if you want to compensate this is how you do it with the gauge.
I have sold a few of these and I didn't have instructions printed out on how to set for compensation ...so they weren't included..so here it is in a picture ...You just release the M3 grubscrews holding the pins and reset them at an angle.

These will handle anyting that requires equal pitches.. bridge pins, headstocks tail pieces..whatever...My Mrs uses one for un-picking stitches when shes dressmaking

I call e'm "string spacing gauge" But we've got to come up with a good name one day..."Nut Scratcher" was one suggestion

Well! thanks for that vote of confidence Kim ...You're right I don't do this for money..I'm retired now and i'm 75 in a couple of months and the mortgage is paid off...and I do all this stuff mainly for fun.

Nice little Vid Ken, think if I ever decided to go this route, even though I'm a Tool and Diemaker myself, I'd buy one from you! Repetitive tasks such as assembling just one of these and I would be a cot case. Well done but can you suggest a way I can now erase that bloody backing tune from my internal playlist! It's similar to the first tune that pops into your head upon waking....It takes until lunchtime for the damn thing to fall out of your head!
