my first 10strings classical
Hi Folks, just completed my 1st attempt on a 10strings classical. I have always wanted to play one since I first saw N Yepes played one on ages ago.
B&S - Macassar Ebony and the Top is cedar with lattice style bracing. its Fun! especially shaping the over-sized neck.

Re: my first 10strings classical
Beautiful choice of timbers there Jeffery and all glued together in your usual faultless style. You must have big paws to play ten strings, I struggle with six!

"Jesus Loves You."
Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.

Simply stunning and excellent timber choices, very much to my taste - I'd love to have a play of something like this.
Re: my first 10strings classical
Well done Jeffrey, plenty of nice things to say about this one. Narcisso was a great musician so its no wonder you were inspired by him. Excellent work.

Re: my first 10strings classical
What a beautiful guitar (as always)! Congrats Jeffrey.
The design pattern on second headstock looks absolutely amazing too.
In fact the initial idea of Ramírez was to add some sympathetic strings inside the guitar (similarly to a viola d'amore and the hardanger fiddles), but not being able to stop the additional strings from vibrating when they shouldn't sound at all, and not wanting to add a cumbersome mechanism like a "piano's pedal" he first gave it up until he received a phone call from his friend Narciso Yepes to whom he formerly had talked about about this project, and who told him "forget the internal strings, just add four bass strings in this and that tuning pitch".
However, reading what Ramírez wrote about the first few minutes Yepes was playing the brand new 10-string guitar clearly shows that even the master had to struggle "a bit" with the broad fretboard!

When watching the videos of Yepes playing his 10-string guitar you'll see that the four additional bass strings don't get played very often.Nick wrote: You must have big paws to play ten strings, I struggle with six!

Source: En Torno a la Guitarra, José Ramírez III, 1990 - you may find a better translation in the English version of this book (Things About the Guitar).En una reunión íntima, puse esta guitarra en manos de Yepes, que empezó a tantearla, tratando de interpretar alguna obra. Parecía un alumno de primer año, o algo peor. Al rato, levantó sus ojos hacia el cielo. Me temí que iba a soltar una serie de denuestos, pero no. Lo que dijo fue esto: "En qué lío más maravillosos me he metido!".
In an intimate gathering, I put this guitar in the hands of Yepes, who began to explore it, trying to interpret a work. He resembled a first year's student, or a bit worse. After a while he raised his eyes skyward. I was afraid he was going to release a series of insults, but no. What he said was this: "In what a wonderful tangle I have put myself!".

Ive got alot of Ypes's music in my collection. My late classical guitar teacher was a pupil of Ypes so I got a fair bit of exposure to his music and my teacher also played a Matsuoka 10 string which Ypes was playing at the time. Ive always meant to track down what happened to that guitar after my teacher passed away..its something I need to do next time Im back in Christchurch, NZ.

Beautiful headstock Jeffery, and you're a lucky man Martin. Definitely do some detective work and see if his 10'er is still in circulation, cos you just never ever know Martin.

Very nice work. One of your headstock inlays is similar to one I recently did, though I have to say yours is more neatly done than mine. I have yet to master neatly and accurately excavating the inlay cavity.

Re: my first 10strings classical
Jeffry, are you using 5 a side tuners or do you chop up 3 a side tuners? A source of your tuners would be much appreciated.

Hi MArtin, I've order those single tuners from StewMac by SCHERTLER. there are cheaper than those classical tuners for 10strings.

Re: my first 10strings classical
Hi Jeffrey,
Rubner charges for custom "lengths" per "tuner button" added, so that any of their classical tuners for a 10-string guitar costs 10/6 of a tuner for a 6-string guitar. Well, at least it was like that when I ordered a set of custom tuners for a charango a couple of years ago. Shipping may be more expensive though than what Stewmac charges. You might want to convince them to not only offer the most expensive shipping possible.
