Luthier Visits
I planned this trip a few years ago but didn't get it underway. My idea was to drive from Brisbane to Melbourne visiting Luthiers on the way. Dropping in for a chat and looking at workshops and perhaps picking up a few tips. I had a few Luthiers interested at the time. I am thinking of it again as a means to motivate myself to get more activity into my Classical Guitar making. I have a few instruments on the go but have stumbled. Anyone interested please let me know and I shall see if it really happens this time.

Re: Luthier Visits
Hi Zendo, your post brought back memories of when I did this type of trip back in 1979 or so. Left Alice Springs NT for Melbourne with my list of guitar builders and my 12 year old son. Not much of a list, maybe 7 or 8 back then. Traveled 700km of dirt road [in flood] countless river and creek crossings in my old HQ Holden [that didn't even get me halfway] only to have three builders give me any time at all.
I know things will be different for you these days. I remember ringing these guy's and introducing myself and asking to visit, and in most cases I got a "what for"?
Since that time I have only met 3 others, I've got to get out more.

I know I'm in the wrong direction, but in case anyone else is reading this, I always welcome people who like a shed visit.
I actually get far more from overseas contact me and come around than Aussies. Had one from California a few weeks back. Was a great day.

I am in Sydney. I don't make guitars but if you are passing by on a weekend you are welcome to visit and see what double basses are made of.

Good to see your moniker on here again Mathew, can't recall if you posted any pics of the French bass resto you were working on a while back, how did that turn out?

Re: Luthier Visits
the French bass is still happening and I hope to complete soon. I have not updated my website for a while. I have been posting progress on the bass and other projects in other places from time to time, where I can freely edit and rearrange my images and posts. Try my facebook.

It's probably a "Gaggle" of luthiers, as you'd have to be a real goose to build guitars for a living! lolrocket wrote:what's the collective term for luthiers? a school?![]()

Zendo, I'm in Brisbane if you're looking for somewhere to start. I'm not sure how much I can add to your knowledge base as I feel like a relative newbie however I'd very happy to catch-up. Andrew
