Hi Guys
has anyone used aussie oak for necks
I found some quarter sawn stuff just the right size for necks at my local carbatec so bought it and have just laminated a couple of neck pieces
one with jarrah and the other with sheoak but havent had any experience with it but its light(both in weight and colour) and looks like it should be ok ?

Re: Aussie oak
I believe Jack Spira has used Victorian Ash for necks and found it quite satisfactory.

Re: Aussie oak
I've used it on a couple of necks at a customers request Dave and it seems fine. Wayne

G'day Dave
A bit of a complexity with Aussie Oak is that it is a really broad sweep of Eucalypt species with varying properties . Some of these like Euc obliqua are at the heavy end and others like Euc. delagatensis are much lighter . The Ash Eucalypts move a lot in drying but the good news is that their unit shrinkage values , that is their movement in service statistics are really quite good , certainly no cause for concern . Their stiffness values are good and most are strong in small dimensions . I reckon Alpine Ash particularly is one that would be really suitable for necks .
It's a bit topical for me at the moment as I'm grading out 200 cubic metres of Ash Eucalypts , pulling aside some nice old air dried quarter boards for neck stock .
