Mumble Server (VOIP) FREE TO USE for forum members

Hey Guys,
I just rented a mumble server for the month to see how the service provider is compared to others I have tried in the past (An NZ based Video Gaming Server Company).

Basically mumble is like skype with voice/ microphone only and with far greater audio quality. Mumble uses far less bandwidth than programs like skype and the clarity/ quality of the audio is superb if you have anything above a $15-25 microphone/ headset then the microphones are fine. However if you are using a microphone from 90s then it can be a bit hit and miss.

I primarily bought it for some mates and I to muck around on and chat whilst browsing the web or watching tv or just generally when we were at the computer checking emails.
But the other day I figured it would be a cool idea to open it up to ANZLF members who might want to use it to have group discussions or chat/ keep in contact with instrument builders/ mates, people on the other side of the country or the other side of the world (depending upon latency) with no cost to members (except the cost of your ISP monthly internet bill).

You could even hypothetically host discussions, keynote speakers, or do karaoke or play guitars or advise mates regarding troubleshooting/ an issue... It can be a little tricky to configure but myself or the people who frequent the mumble can point you in the right direction. I'll even throw together a quick tutorial on how to use the program in the next hour or so for anyone keen.

It is an extremely cheap service to run on my end (roughly $50- per year) and is open for forum members to experiment and use it you see fit.

There are only 50 slots (as in max 50 people on the server at once) but the server can be upgraded if it becomes a very popular/ useful tool for discussion.

Here are the Mumble instructions once installed. The installing is a simple as clicking the exe file once downloaded

So The first thing you want to do if you want to use the Mumble is to go to settings and ensure that the sound quality is set to high (output)
Then follow these simple instructions to stop your microphone transmitting when you don't want to talk to a far less annoying "Push to Talk" which allows you to hold down a key to transmit...

From experience users in Canada and the US have very little to no issues connecting to Aussie Mumble Servers. There is a slight delay between what is said over mic however. Haven't had much experience with users from Europe but it will be interesting to see

Good idea Stu,

I will download it and do some testing with it when I get some spare time. I have tried VOIP lots of times in the past and it never really lived up to it's promises, I will be interested to see the quality of this.

Just a note for MAC users these instructions are different to what MAC users have to do... so I can run you through how to work the program on MAC individually. Check your version OSX first in whatever the my computer equivalent is for OSX...
