One gramme bridge (well, almost)

I never before have weighed a bridge, but I couldn't help to do so when I had finished this sopranino ukulele bridge.



It is made of plum wood (I measured a density of somewhere around 0.7). No tie block, no pins: the strings will go through the top and have a simple knot. To be fair I should have added the bridge plate weight (cherry 0.5 mm thin) which is necessary to prevent the string knots to dig into the 0.8 mm thin silver fir top (Abies alba). The bone saddle weighs another 0.68 grammes.

Gee that's light, don't you have a problem with the fan blowing it off the bench.

Here's a bridge from another manufacturer thats been considerably lightened, I did not weigh it though.

Yes, is IS a problem! Before gluing it to the top I preheated it as usual with my adjustable heat gun at the lowest air speed (it is really low) and at the first attempt (before weighing it down with a wood scrap) I just blew it off the bench! (That's when it crossed my mind that I should weigh it for my records ). In the end its weight is just a number, and it seems that bridges that small (53 x 12 x 5 mm) simply weigh +/- 1 g.

That Cole Clark bridge has seen better days, I dont like there front cutaway for there pickups personally
