Interesting timber figure

Post by James Mc » Wed Mar 05, 2008 9:38 am

When I was in PNG I met some people from one of the forest tribes that was only discovered in the last 50 years. They believe animal spirits that protected the forest live in the trunks of old trees. When a dies or is killed this spirit is sometimes trapped in the wood and if you cut this wood you can sometimes find the spirit. It is very good to free the trapped spirit so it can see the sun, wood with the shadow of a trapped animal spirit it is the best token to bring luck. This tribe never allow trees to be killed in their forest but the value fallen timber as a gift from the spirits.

I saw this BZ set listed on ebay and thought it was worth sharing. If there is such a thing as timber with the shadows of animal spirits in it, I suspect it would look a lot like this.

What a gorgeous set!

LNL the other day had an interview with a PNG activist who has managed to save large tracts of his peoples forest from the Malaysian haircut that PNG is being subjected to. He reiterated that the local beliefs are very strong and I think entirely appropriate to their situation. The forest is their livelihood.

Did you buy it?
make mine fifths........

I'd have thought the same Hesh, but I have a mate in the US who knows her timbers and got a set from this guy. She is convinced it is genuine BZ, although she wasn't happy that the worm holes in the set she got weren't mentioned and you couldn't see them in the photos. The set she got had more of the traditional grain contrast you expect with BZ but was still a very dark set.
