repair to thin plastic binding

Post by seeaxe » Thu Sep 27, 2012 7:16 am

Here's a question for the repair gurus

I have been asked to glue on a piece of white plastic binding about 75mm long that has fallen off the side of an Ovation neck,, between the third and fifth fret markers.

The only time I have used this kind of binding material was on a Stewmac kit build and I used Weld-on cement as recommended by them. I recall it partially melts the plastic binding to glue it on

My concern is that the binding is very thin and I dont want to harm it - I dont have a spare piece to test different glues - I am only going to get one go at this.

My question is whats the best way of re-attaching this piece?
Weld on cement? I know that will work but might shrink or melt the binding
Super glue? - will that melt it or will it even work?
Other?

Also, when I dry fit it, you can see the joins, looks like the material was in some tension or has shrunk since it came off - any way of filling the gaps? Of course its aged and its not white anymore so I am not hopeful of any good answers there.

I can post some photos if that helps.....

Cheers
Richard

I'm not a repair guru, but I just put a drop of superglue on a piece of ABS binding and it didn't seem to melt it, I can test further if you like or I could post you enough to re do the whole board free, I don't think that I'll ever use it :)

The best repair process would be,

Remove the frets at the location of the damaged binding,
Take a piece of new binding and thickness it down to the right height and width so it will not look out of place,
45 degree cut the ends and the ends of the binding on the neck,
Use superglue and simply glue into place,
Back it up with a piece of wax paper and flat piece of wood and leave it alone for an hr, it will be dry in 2-5 minutes but let it sit,
Hand shape it back up.
Replace the frets removed

Wolla, should be an invisible repair
