What the F*%kin hell??!!!

Post by Nick » Mon Jun 25, 2012 1:36 pm

Just looked at getting 3x 0.020" carbide router bits for inlay work off of John Hall at Bluescreek. 3 bits = Total US $42, Ok they are carbide.... Shipping options- USPS is the only option John offers but it gives three rates, cheapest = 49 friggin US bucks!! it then jumps to $144 for parcel post, can't remember what the last was, my eyes had faded to black by that stage. Flippin heck! 3 fart arse bits, 1/8th shank, that probably weigh no more than 10 grams max & the US postal system want 49 bucks for it! Pffffff, nothing to do with John of course, but I'm going to be looking closer to home I think.

so get 20 bits and still only pay $49 postage. Getting only three seems like a waste.

12 spruce tops from Alaska to Oz.....$80.

Something smells fishy to me.....I've had all kinds of stuff sent from the US, and tho the cost of shipping, say a guitar(Iceman, neck off $78US) can be crazy if it goes over 1050mm because OzPost won't take it, tho they deliver EMS stuff that's bigger than that??????

Send it to Lillian, probably $4, sheesh
I wish I was half the man my dog thinks I am....

I always tell them to send it surface post. If it's small it'll come by air anyway.

Though, I wouldn't mind a few new bits if you want to buy a bunch.

Send John an email or give him a call, there's obviously a screw up with his site and he should be able to send them in a USPS small flatrate envelope. If he doesn't want to do that for you then go elsewhere cause it aint that bad...... i.e. I just paid $17 freight for 6 bearings to come express from VBX USA (thanks Nick)...2 days, ordered on Friday night and DHL delivered them today.

Cheers

DHL didn't make you pay to "walk" them through customs for you like FedEx and UPS does? Nice.

DHL have been great to deal with over the last couple of years now. Quicker and cheaper on almost all orders from StewMac now.

Thanks for the replies everybody, I have a few options to try now :D & I may use Perry's suggestion & get more than the three I originally thought of. For those that were interested I'll let you know how many I ordered & if you still want to take a few of them then you'll have the option  The 0.020" are good for the single line wooden purf strips that the likes of LMI sell, most veneer sheets I've had/got are shaved to the same thickness too, fortunately. This job will even spark the manufacture of a new routing jig/tool as well  If it works out any good I'll shove pics up in the main forum.

No I've been lucky with them & the fact that a company such as Stewmac, that has an enormous amount of shipping, keeps an eye on them (via surveys e.t.c) must be good at keeping them honest. Whenever I've ordered, unless it's just some fart arse bits & pieces, I've always found the DHL option the cheapest & I've usually received the goods with 4 days.

I was, er, bent over and, er, violated (sorry Lil, I know there's a Lady present), by DHL 5 or 6 years ago. They told me they wouldn't release my $400 shipment from LMI unless I gave them another $90 for customs clearance. Too scared to try them again, especially as there was no hassle with customs in the first place.

No worries Paul. I understand where you are coming from. The publishing houses stopped using DHL in less a year of giving them a go. Totally mistreated the books. Fran and JB watched a DHL guy drop their books on the ground from the back of the truck, breaking open the box. When he brought them in they said they wouldn't take them (there are first editions, collectables) because they were damaged. Driver said that's the way they were sent. And started to get pissy about taking them back when a customer came over and said we saw you toss them off the truck.

Its good to hear that they managed to get things straightened out, at least with international deliveries. Publishing houses will not get them another chance.

You should have applied a bit of womanly charm on the DHL guy....Fran should have held him while you broke his arms

The only problem I have found with DHL is that you really need to be a large company like stew mac in order to get very reasonable shipping. I did a phone quote for an electric guitar recently to be posted to SA from VIC and it was like upwards of $220

If you're shipping within OZ, I would use Fastways Couriers....You do have t5o buy a book of coupons(@ $130), but for $13 I can send a package to Sydney, $26 to Mel/Ad...Inusred for $1500.

Usually overnigght to Syd?Bris, 3 days to Mel/Ad....Never had a problem, after several hundred shipments :cl

LOL, I wasn't there, but that was JB's inclination. He's since of humor is lacking when it comes to messed up shipments. It's his shop.

3 hrs of sleep, 15 hr day and dyslexic. I'm grateful that most of the words were there.

I was supposed to be born in Sydney. My father was offered a teaching position there, but my mother was having problems carrying me. Doc wouldn't let her fly and my mother told my father what he could do with his slow boat. So I grew up in a back water town in Virginia.
