Adhesive advice (no, not that one but another one)

Post by charangohabsburg » Fri Jun 15, 2012 1:10 pm

Through quite a few years I managed to avoid the necessity to glue any luthierie related plastic or plastic-like item - I believe. Or at least I did not realise it...

But now the time has come. Due to a top repair I had to remove this shiny piece of plastic and I'd like to put it back on because this protector (material and shape) is very typical for the instruments of this luthier, and the instrument is practically new (but with a broken, repairable top).

This night I made a call to Bolivia to ask what he (the creator of this charango) used to glue the protector on and he told me "easy, just use shoemaker's glue!". I have shoemaker's glue, but it smells quite different than what I could smell while de-gluing the protector (I applied moderate heat, about 50°C).

The protector is about 0.2 mm thin. He told me that CA would melt it. I don't want to use Epoxy because I'm afraid that a future removal would be impossible or very difficult.

Any ideas what kind of glue I could or should use without running the risk of ruining the protector?
(I don't want to have sent me a genuine looking replacement from Bolivia...)

Here some photos of what I'm talking about:

Two options: Aquadhere (white PVC that sets clear) and use the ES method, or use transfer adhesive (LMII) and the "float-on" method. Either way, everything needs to be really clean.

As Trev suggests I use the pickguard adhesive (made by 3m) that LMI sells. It's the beez kneez for that application but also cool because the wax paper backing is good to keep and use later with stikit gold psa abrasive when flossing in the cheeks of the neck..its real thin and slides nicely over the guitar sides so you get no scratching as you drag.. 8)

Markus a good mate of mine makes/repairs shoes and uses a few different glues. His mainstay is a contact adhesive that is heated first to accelerate the cure and make the sole more pliant but i sure wouldn't put it near any instrument top, the thinners in it smell strong enough to dissolve or lift many a finish.

What a difference a letter makes! That should have been PVA, of course!

Thanks so much everyone!

I deduce from your replies that any (conventional) pickguard material is melting when getting in touch with CA, is that correct?
