Spirals

Post by woodrat » Mon May 28, 2012 9:35 pm

I thought about putting it in the anything goes part but it was Lutherie generated so I thought that I would post it here anyway. Its a bit of fun but very interesting too....perhaps others have noticed these spirals as they have carved braces too. I have noticed them in particular since I have been using the brace shapes in the Gore/Gilet book which is either a triangle on a rectangle or rectangular as in the falcate primary braces. I have showed them via email to TG and a Mathematician/Author in the UK called Alex Bellos who wrote a great book on Maths called "Alex's Adventures In Numberland" It is a great read. He wrote it to encourage interest in Maths especially those who perhaps didnt get really into maths at school. He has tried to make the subject fun and interesting....he has succeeded and I would highly recommend his book. Alex said in a reply to me sending him some pictures of them that they must be some sort of mathematics going on at the cutting edge to produce them.
...anyway I started to notice them and thought that I would share it with the wider Lutherfolk on the forum....So here are some pictures of some of the shapes that I have seen pop up on the end of my brace shaving chisel.....

Cheers....

John

Obviously they dont all turn out perfectly.....

...but sometimes they do just come off the chisel and describe an (almost) perfect spiral that is beautiful....

...this post is just for fun....:)

Wood porn in it's mildest form you mean John!
It's almost the same as car enthusiasts getting all excited at a photo of somebody else's double overhead whatsa flobbits, or train spotters finally sighting engine number 445 on the northern line that's been out of service for ten years!
