Have Enough Planes?
Have Enough Planes?
For those of us who don't have enough planes, need a small hand plane or just have space in their stable for one more,
Lie-Nielsen has add a violin plane to their line up. And it is at a tempting price I might add.

I am well aware of the forum rules Martin. I've been hanging at Bob's house since the beginning, just like you.kiwigeo wrote:Lillian please read forum terms and conditions......they quite clearly state NO PORN is to be posted!!!
Which is why I used a link and not the photos, so there.
Besides, I've done worse and Bob hasn't so much as sent me to time out once.
Can't you just feel it in your hand. It weighs a little less than a half a pound. You'll feel its presence without getting tried of holding it. You know its going to be perfect right out of the box. And its going to become you new best friend.

Re: Have Enough Planes?
I'm sure I saw these planes at the last Canberra wood show at the Lie-Neilsen stand. I've been looking for them ever since. This looks the same but they had two, one a little larger. Lovely little planes and they fill that space between finger planes and small block planes. Cool.

Dom, you probably say the block plane. That's another sweet plane to add to your stable.

Re: Have Enough Planes?
Thanks Lillian, very nice.
Being a "Violin" plane, I'm assuming a curved sole and corresponding blade?
Just they don't mention it and it is difficult to see in the pictures...
Jeremy.

Jeremy, I think it is a flat sole and straight blade....from how I read it.

Very nice indeed.
They soon will release this one (a bit bigger but still small enough to not occupy valuable shed space):

Bet that one is a bear to adjust.
Waddy, please let us know what you think of the plane after you've had some quality time with it of course.

Just because I can.
If you haven't checked out their entire site, allow me to direct your attention to their inlay tools
I have always wanted to pick up their thicknessing gauge, and contemplated their radius cutter. But their
planes kept calling to me too. What a hard choice.
They also carry Auriou Rasps.

Re: Have Enough Planes?
No, it was much smaller. Bruce was with me and might remember. As I said, I looked everywhere for them and couldn't find them anywhere on the LN sites so perhaps they were pre production or something.Lillian wrote:Dom, you probably say the block plane. Anyway, very cool.

Right. It is something like a double-oh-(point)-eight secret weapon: a fingerjackplane.kiwigeo wrote:Whats that....a No 0.8 jointer????charangohabsburg wrote:

Not really.
I only needed Photoshop to adjust it!

Re: Have Enough Planes?
Nice job with the plane Markus.
Dom, I know these aren't LNs, but you might want to have a look see anyway.

St James Bay, which is oddly in the desert in Arizona, has a clunky website, but worth taking the time to check out.
http://www.stjamesbaytoolco.com/ Make sure you hit all the links, they have goodies hidden all over the place.

Re: Have Enough Planes?
So can anyone clarify if these are flat and straight bladed; or curved sole, curved blade?
John (as above) believes they are flat - like a mini block plane.
If so, what exactly makes them a "Violin Plane" ?? Just the size ?
Jeremy.

Re: Have Enough Planes?
Nice neat little block plane Lillian.
Maybe they are thinking of flat top violins Jeremy
And nice photoshop picture Marcus. You could do any thing with that trick up your sleeve mate
, Like have us all believe you just built a triple neck grand concert with strings on both sides.
Have a look at this for a small hand plane

Re: Have Enough Planes?
Yes, well that's all very well...
But is that one a curved sole plane ??

Jeremy.
Re: Have Enough Planes?
Jeremy and Dom,
St James Bay Tool Company carries a few different round sole planes. The Violin Plane with Side handles, two squirrel planes (you need to look under the New Product tab to find those) and a set of three Instrument Makers Carving Planes and last but not least, a handled brace scraper. These are located under the Tools tab, Luthier's Tool sub tab.
Diefenbacher's carries I.A. Lutz Violin Planes which are archer, front back and side to side.
