Disclaimer: No association with seller at all...just stumbled across it in my regular ramblings through the evilBay....thought it could be of use to someone here :)

What I'd call fairly "industrial", not sure it'd be worth what he's asking but if somebody can knock the seller down it may useful for carving archies/cello's. Takes all the fun out of carving, that blade on wood sound/feel!

Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.

Hey Rod, has your wife noticed the underblanket is missing off the bed?

Well that's where the underblanket I have in my workshop came from

Ain't that the truth Rod! I know in Bob Benedetto's DVD series he mentioned his pantograph & showed it buried in the back of his shop. Said he tried it but just didn't like it, missed out on a lot of the feedback the wood gave him from hand working it.

Martin, his wife was away when that picture was taken. It was all washed & fluffed up & back on the bed by the time she returned, complete with a rose on her pillow.

No amount of fluffing would hide the gobs of shellac and hide glue.

Nick, I got the impression from the BB dvd that he roughs all his tops on the copier and does the finishing by hand. I am sure he said it does not take long to rough out a top but he uses the copier now. If you are making as many guitars as Bob and your arching is the same on most models it makes sense to use a copier. Productivity.

That was what I read into it too Dom

Hmmm I could be wrong! I must watch the particular DVD again but I believe Bob only makes a handful of guitars now & leaves the production stuff to the factory which would probably be pretty much CNC produced.

Nick, I could be wrong as well. The DVD is pretty old now so it would not surprise me that he has slowed down and changed tack. But he hunked out those top and back arches so quickly to get his basic arching. That little scrub plane he uses is an amazing tool. I've made one but it won't cut as deep as Bob's. I think I need a heavier body to the plane.
Same thing existed when I was making surfboards. You could get preshapes they were called and a computer had created the rocker and the final thickness and the top arching and they charged 100bucks. It used to take me about 30mins to get to that stage using a power plane and it gave me more scope to change things. There was still a skill in using a power plane on a foan blank and keeping it all symmetrical. But that's not bad money, 100 bucks for 30 mins work if you can get it right.
Anyway, a copier would be good of you wanted to test out different thickness plates or some other mod as you can basically create a bunch of perfectly alike plates and make small changes that are easier to track. So I can see a use for one and if its only a few hundred bucks I can't see how you could go wrong. Although large heavy duty drawer slides and some scrap wood and an reasonably accurate copier could be made i the workshop. You still need a perfect template to create copies and that takes hand skills. So its not either or, I think there would be a place for such a jig if you make archtops and violins and like to experiment.
Cheers
