I can't decide what my next builds going to be . I have no commissions currently so now's a good chance to cross one off the wish/bucket list & have a bit of fun.
I was going to go with the 'smaller than a dready' twelve stringer (using my double back system) but then saw Tim Kill's Reso Weezy in Bob's Port Fairy instrumentworx photo's (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4129) & it got my mind working in a whole new direction bugger it! So I thought it might be fun to let you guys decide! Which ever choice looses won't get eliminated altogether, it'll just get built later down the track!

That ones on the list Martin, just filling up one of middle row seats currently, I can hardly play 6 strings that well so what the hell am I going to do with 13 courses of the buggers! (I have Van Edwards Baroque plans & cd sitting there for a future build)

I know Sean's keen for a square neck so that could be an option but that'd mean me having to learn to play it! (or he could show off some of his excellent blues chops in a video for you, once I've finished it!)

Make the 12stringer, great challenge for bracing playability etc,
either way, with you on the tools its gonna be a gem.

Just because I was wondering, whats a double back system ?

If I had to choose on what I'd like listen to being played right now ,I think I would go the other way. I didn't think of that at the time though.

It's a method I first used on a Maccafferri build (shouldn't really say it's my method because it's probably been used before Nothing new in Luthiery! I just came up with my own ideas & theories) about halfway down this page and also on two subsequent builds Rob, here. I believe (without any hard scientific evidence or numbers to back it up! ) that it produces slightly more volume from a smaller body because the back is more active & less influenced (read damped) by the player's gut, which in my case is a major influence!

I voted informal ,oh wait ,that was a another poll. I went for the reso because I have enough odds and sods to build a simple plank lap steel. I want to see if I have an affinity for it or it's just another instrument to add to the heap of unplayed strings:? .

There was a guy in the states that was heading down the spruce track at the same time as I did the Macca (how twilight zone was that?!!), he started posting on one of the forums (Dennis's I think) but the post never did progress past the putting the inner plate in so I don't know how successful he was or if he even finished it, he braced the inner plate similar to a classical I believe, I must try finding that thread again. Spruce could indeed be the go Kim.

Go for the 12 Nick ! you won't regret it . Mine gets a fair amount of playing. Compensate all the strings and you'll find it awesome. Have another quick listen to John Butler !

I also went for a 13 fret 24.9 " scale . Just a little easier to play and less tension on the neck. Check it out .

Thanks Craig & Trev, compelling reasons right there! I've always loved your 12 string Craig & have your bridge thread bookmarked.
Trevor, did you still keep a 25" or longer scale & shift the bridge back or did you shorten it (similar to Craig's 24.9)? Good to hear that even though the neck/body join is at the twelfth you still retained that big sound too by the bridge's more central placement in the vibrating zone. Both give me valuable food for thought.

Trevor, did you still keep a 25" or longer scale...

I used 24.9" (632mm) on a Gibson 185-ish body shape.

Nut and saddle compensation is something to think about on a 12 string. Makes a big difference.
