Looking for System 3 Epoxy in Australia

Post by Allen » Sun Feb 26, 2012 6:48 pm

Anyone know where I can get the System 3 epoxy line in Australia? I've struck out locally it seems, unless one of my suppliers can source it from down south and bring it in.

If that's the West product, then Carbatec usually stock it, at least Carbatec in Melb does.
If you are really stuck Allen, I have a new batch sitting on the shelf which i won't be using for a while and can post to you.....

Does it HAVE to be System 3, Allen?

A few years back, ok maybe a decade ago. when I was building kayaks I was after the Aus equivalent of system 3, or west systems epoxy, and the closest match (maybe the same stuff with a different badge) was international epiglass. Works exactly the same - and I spent a lot of time making sure I had the right stuff. Isn't so prone to Amine blush like the System three stuff though - probably better for guitars, 'cause you'd have to wash the blush off with soap and water.

The International stuff is available from boating chandlers (so double what you think you should pay). But it is good gear, and I was getting the same results as my yank mates. But, obviously that was for kayak building not guitar making. You should be able to walk away with a litre of the stuff with hardener for $50.

No, it's not the WEST Systems stuff. I can get that here easily. Been using it since I started building instruments.

There has been some good discussions over on UU about finishing and Rick Turner has described his process using System 3 products and Smiths. It involves a first coat of either brands of their C.P.E.S. product. A very thin penetrating sealer. Used to really soak into the wood fibres. He prefers Smiths brand for this product, but I don't hold much hope for finding it in Australia.

Then the next session is with their Clear Coat Laminating Resin.

Is sytem 3 the brand name?
ATL composites have a lot of different types, cant see system 3 there though.
They possibly have a similar product. Last time I rang them they were good on the phone as well.

System 3 lists
http://boatcraft.com.au/
in Qld as their only distributor in Australia, but it does not appear that they stock the full line

Yes, System 3 is the brand name. I did see the BoatCraft link on a Google search. Limited stock though.
