Yes, it was a spray on polyurethane.
The problem occurs because the adhesion between what ever you use to fix the leaf to and the leaf itself is a very weak bond. Not much will stick to metal as effectively as say wood to wood.
The finish is stuck like snot to a screen door on the rest of the table and is very hard. No problem putting a hot pot on it at all. Its just in areas that get high wear that the leaf has let go. As I said. Not a worry for this table, as it gives it a patina that we quite like. But I would fear that on a guitar you may not appreciate the same look.
