Band saw rubber tyres link

Post by auscab » Tue Jan 17, 2012 10:44 am

I bought myself a Big Band saw not long ago that is going to have a bit of restoration done on it, 36" wheels and stabnds 8' tall a 1930s Barker,
One of its problems , a typical band saw problem is that the rubber tyres need replacing.
A freind [ Thanks Peter ] sent me a link the other day to this company [ Carter Products]in the US that supplies tyres, I have already bought some rubber to do my two wheels myself and will give that a go first, the thickness I want seems a bit thicker than Carter Products has as well.

Any one else need tyres or gluing info and more ,here is the link.

Thanks for the link Rob....I have an old 18 inch Woodfast cast iron saw and it is in need of tyres. I think that I will take advantage of the Aussie and do that soon. What do you think the difference would be between Urethane and rubber?

I dont know the difference,
One possibility is Urethane is cheaper to make and thats why they are being presented,?
Or are they better, last longer ?
The large saw I use has cork tires, no crown ,this was how it came from the factory, works fine.
My smaller saw has rubber tyres ,about 7.5 mm thick including the crown.

The big Barker is getting 9mm thick rubber fitted [ rubber from Purple Pig], scarf joined, then glued down.
I'm then trueing it up with the wheels on the saw, first I will try to spin the wheel and take it down close with a chisel, then set up my linisher to machine the crown, finish at 7.5 mm

I've fitted urethane to a 12" Durden and a 3 wheeler with 10" and like them a lot. No glue required, you simply stretch them on to the wheel and then run a couple of screwdriver shafts around the circumference a few times to even out the tension. They are touted to wear better than rubber because they are harder and very even across profile, they are quite to. I would say that all vintage bandsaws would have been fitted with them standard had the material been available back when.

Cheers

I've got Carter guides on my bandsaw and they're the best I've ever used.
