Stiff Grover Machine head

I have a 1974 Martin D28 that I have had for a long time. I don't play it at all these days. One of the machine heads (Grover) has gone very stiff.
Are these serviceable? If not, can you replace one, or should you replace the lot? If replacing, any suggestions on suppliers.

Hi Frank, Stewmac will supply one-offs if you request them by email. They don't have costs on the website. I had to replace a similar tuner late last year.

Try untying the string from the post, then give the post & shaft a few squirts with Inox (the 'Supreme Lubricant' - comes with a thin plastic tube that fits in the nozzle for fine spraying) then give the tuner a few vigorous turns:

Failing that check with your local music shops to see if they have any second-hand tuners available that match your Grovers. One of our local stores which takes on repairs keeps a box of sundry guitar bits & pieces under the counter, which has been a great source of spare parts.

Ah, she's stuffed, mate. Best you just send that old D28 over to me! No, but seriously, as I understand it Grovers offer a 'Lifetime' warranty on their tuners. At least they do nowadays. Maybe you can contact them and find out? You might get a free replacement. They look like Rotomatics to me.

Thanks everyone. Lubricant has made it quite usable again. They are sealed units so I couldn't inspect the gear. In the process I have found out they are Grover 102's (rotomatics, 14:1), and I can replace the whole set for $60-$100. Frank

The screw was there (flat blade). I removed it but the peg would not slide out.
When I took it to the repair shop (Real Guitars - Brendan Mason - very experienced), the chap tried reducing the stiffness by adjusting that screw, so the screw seems to have some impact on this as well. He certainly did not try to remove the peg.

I got a set of these a few weeks ago. I bid around $11-$12 I can't remember exactly and was outbit but got a second chance offer to buy them for the starting price.
They seem to be genuine and shipping was pretty fast aswell.
