Thanls guys, could have been a valve amp the guy had - he was a TV tech and built his own.
I suppose using both speakers side by side in a "tube" would interfere with the Chandli patterns, so think it better to use one only.

If you are worried connect both speaks but just use the one over the guitar. Use a longer lead on the second speaker and put it further away if you are worried about interference.
