Routing Question

Post by needsmorecowbel » Tue Aug 02, 2011 5:05 pm

Is there a way to make the control cavity cover (POSITIVE) from my pre existing (NEGATIVE) Control Cavity Ledge/ Cavity Outline guide? I could easily whip a cover up with a band saw/ Jigsaw. But if you were only allowed to use a router with bearings/ bushings how could you do it?

Hi Stu

Sort of possible, but depends on having the right size bits/bearings and the cavity ledge an offset from the cavity itself.

1: To make a template of the cavity, use a straight bit with a bottom bearing running in the cavity.
2: Use a rebate bit with a bottom bearing to cut a second enlarged template opening from the first template. Repeat if necessary.
3: Use the enlarged template and a straight bit with a top bearing to cut the cover.

Bandsaw would be quicker probably.

Yep, just use a set of template tracing router bits with a rabbetting set of bearings.

Double sided tape 3mm craftwood to existing guitar,
Use trimming router bit in cavity to make craftwood cutout 1/4 iinch oversize
Remove template and place over cavity cover you want to make
Use template tracing router bit.. 1/4 inch bearing and cutter
Cut out exact cavity cover

Or make youself a small cnc router and draw it up on the computer and hit the go button and machine one out.
I use the photocopier to create my image from the guitar, and then convert that to computer code and machine a blank cover on the cnc router
