Liam, I know just what you mean mate...sometimes I could just stand there and turn a perfectly good stick into shavings just to watch and 'hear' it happen, I 'love' the sound of a sharp plane rolling off shavings...problem is that sometimes I do just that..

Yes Craig its criminal how one's insanity can infect others....guess that explains WAS, TAS, and guitar building forums in general.

I have a machine just for this purpose. My chisels are like razors, make my own screwdrivers etc
Thanks for the kind offer Steve your machine certainly looks the business. Can you tell us a bit more about it? What is it? How does it do what it does? What grit does it grind the tool to etc? As for sharpness my edge tools do OK but if ever I need pitting ground out to lap in a new acquisition I may well be in touch with you, where abouts in Perth are you based?

Thank you Markus, Li'l and Joe its a cool little plane and I think I will leave it set up for micro fine cuts. Its just the right size for jointing bookmatched headstock overlays and tiding butt wedges etc and it looks cool just sitting on the tilt shelf of my work area with me other janes 8)

Cheers

That's a snecking good job there Kim ( and Rob ) . A plane to use and enjoy for your lifetime and others to follow. A lot of work , but well worth the effort. It'll put a smile on your dial each time you pick it up.
Love the chisels too , ya lucky bugger. What a bargain !

Its called a tool and cutter grinder, basically used for professional sharpening of anything, be it drills / mill bits / router bits / chisels / saw blades etc, basically if its something that is already sharp it will recut. The grinding wheel is a diamond wheel I think its 240 grit, but the sharpeness of the tools is exceptional.

There are still some things I just dont grind on it, solely becuase of the time factor. It takes time to jig an item in place, that time is sometimes better spent repairing and just purchasing another tool

So, I've had a pretty hellish week, and as the pressure lifted today I felt the need to BUY something .
(It must come as part of the "stay at home to look after the kids" lifestyle package and not a gender thing  )

TAS was biting really hard but I couldn't think of anything I needed to get right at this moment that wouldn't break the monthly budget again.

Anyways, while out with the 3 yr old I decided to stop in at the the second hand shop to peruse the same old load of overpriced useless stuff they always have.

Lo and behold, amongst the selection of split old wood planes with the usual assortment of rusted to sh*t glasgow blades there was a lonely little orphan blade & cap iron.

Not on par with Kim's chisel pack for price, quantity and perfection - but still a nice little find for 15 bucks!
This is after a little clean up of surface rust.

So now I can clean it all up fully & get a nice edge on the blade.
TAS is satisfied.
The need to simply buy is satisfied.
The budget is still OK . :?

Any advice on what type of plane to make for this nice little 1.5" blade?
