Luthier's Room Divider ®

Post by charangohabsburg » Sat Jul 16, 2011 12:31 am

It started when some years back I opened a newly arrived package containing nice but flatsawn Madagascar rosewood and cocobolo. It was a cold day in February and RH was down at some 20-ish percentage. The wood twisted within seconds (literally!). At that instant I got aware of the benefits of not only reading things on Internet but also having accumulated a nice collection of books to weigh these rebels down. Btw, the few lutherie books I own wouldn't have had much effect on the new shape these backs and sides decided wanting to stay in...

Some hours later I had finished this kind of corset where I left the sets in for about two years (without stickering) :

About one year ago I decided to put some spacers between the sets, hoping to accelerate the stabilizing process. By that time I could take the sets out of their corset without any problem.

Some weeks ago I coincidentally discovered Kim's "escape plan" which elements resemble much my own "invention".
As Kim's pictures look so nice I thought it would be a good idea to display some more stash contents that way instead of going on to look at a rather unattractive pile. So I made a few more of those cradles and came up with the ultimate Luthier's Room Divider ® :

Of course it looks like much more than it actually is.

Thats what we all say to justify our obsessive collection of wood! You have found a creative way to make it disappear into the decor Markus...Well Done :cl :cl :cl

Yes Lillian, these are sets for super tiny ukes. So there is no reason to be impressed or jealous  . In fact the small stack sitting on top left in fact is stickered wood dust particles for pore filling, and the room is just a scaled down copy under the microscope.

But seriously, I could get twice as much tonewood into these stacks when not stickering .....and it still would fit under the microscope!

Markus, you must be on the cutting edge of micro-lutherie!

I hear that our mate Martin (Kiwigeo) has moved on to a modular system with a nautical theme for his tonewood storage.

I'm wondering how the hell you can copyright a pile of tonewood........must be Swiss thing.

Ive got serious space issues in the shop right now.......looking at fitting out the attic space above the shop as a tonewood vault.

My workshop (commercial) spilled over years ago, cant afford to buy a new one, so at my home I converted the roof into a floor and then put storage compartments through it, Ive now spilled out of my roof into the dining room, (roof access hole ladder), you willl never never never have enough space, its the nature of the beast.

You get some new space and you go, mmm it would be nice to get that extra thicknesser or bandsaw into that gap and so forth. (well I know I do)

Good to know that. So this means It would be useless to get rid of tools or tonewood 8) . Thanks for the hint Steve! :D

Nice stash Markus :D It's funny how environment shapes us, the first thing I automatically thought when I saw your picture was "How's that lot gonna stay upright in a good shake?" But of course the ground don't shake in Switzerland!

Thats what I expected you to think!

In Arequipa (Peru) where I am living for ca. 2-3 months per year I had to make the stash 2 times broader. ;)
