Spruce top for classical

Post by Alastair » Tue May 17, 2011 3:33 pm

Just bumping this from B&S, in case not seen.

If no-one has a surplus top to sell, I'll look at ordering from one of the suppliers, but would be more comfortable with forum recommendation, rather than ordering lower grade sight unseen.

thanks

Alastair

Just a speculation

Since my uke trial build went down well, (annexed by my daughter), :D I am looking for a spruce top, suitable for a classical , and was wondering if any of you perfectionists have any surplus to requirements?

As this is for an "in-family" second build, together with a Queensland Maple neck (already started), and a 3-piece Silky Oak back and sides, I am not looking for master grade. As long as structurally OK, (good 1/4, run-out and stiffness), I am open to variations in grain and colour which you would perhaps not be happy with in a commission?

If any offers, let me know cost and postage?

many thanks
Regards

Alastair

Is it one of Graham Hein's Englemann tops?

Just to let all know that they will no doubt be in for a bunch of dumb questions in the next few months, as this build is finally getting off the ground. Kitchen is now nearly finished, and I've been granted some "me-time" in the shed. :D

Following the qualified success of my Uke, (my daughter has annexed it, and no.1 son thinks it's "OK"), I am starting on a Classic to replace my wife's aging entry-level Yamaha.

Thanks to Seb, for letting me have one of his surplus Engelmann tops.

I sourced some more Silky Oak from the Ward brothers, which has given me sides and a 3-piece back.

I had already started the neck at the same time as the uke, using Q Maple. It will get headstock veneers of IRW, and Jacaranda. My care package from ALS should get here this week, so there are no more excuses.

I have built the workboard, and will be starting on the plates this week. So far the components have been brought down to near final thickness on my home-built drill press sander.

My intention is to stay with a clean, minimalist look, very similar to the first, I and hope to avoid some of the dramas I identified in the course of that build. Finish will again be FP blonde shellac, although I could be tempted to spray, since I'm now set up for it.

So "Cry havoc, and let slip......."

regards
Regards

Alastair
