A question for my learned friends, or anyone experienced with using velcro backed paper versus stick on when using a home made drum sander with an MDF drum.
Is there much give in the velcro when thicknessing plates (thin sides, 2mm etc) accurately/inaccurately that would be harder than the velcro and the possibilty of damaging the table of the sander as well?
I like the ease of changing paper idea with velcro and also thanks in advance to anyone/everyone who chimes in with their tuppence worth.

If you are talking thickness sander I would not even contemplate it - way too inaccurate/soft. May as well use a sponge paint roller

I remember a couple of people on the other forum who said they used the paper on a smooth drum. They found that the paper stayed cooler, had less burning and that there wasn't any issues with the plate. They just had to run a piece or two through after they first put on the sandpaper so that it would stretch and then tighten it up.
ADDENDUM:
The hook portion was not applied to the drum. They used the just the paper.

I use velcro approach on my home made unit. I find that on tops and backs, I can end up with a bit of variation (no more than 0.2mm), but for smaller width items like sides, binding etc, it is consistent.
You do need to make sure that paper is pulled on pretty tight.
