First Guitar Build
First Guitar Build
I thought I would post some pics on the progress of my first guitar build. There is a lot more to it than I thought!

Hi ????
That looks really nice and tidy - rosewood sides??
I was thinking of doing paua inlay - that looks really nice.
Look forward to seeing more of this one.

Nice work on the inlays.
Welcome to the forum. If you could post up your real name (first name is fine) it'll make addressing you a bit easier.

Re: First Guitar Build
Nice job Leigh, you've done an excellent job on the top with the inlays, very clean lines
I'm not a fan of Paua normally (strange as I am a Kiwi but used to seeing it used as ashtrays I guess
) but your joins e.t.c are well executed & an indication of your work ethic.
I'm gonna have to lift my game I can see if this is what other's first builds look like!
Oh & welcome to the forum by the way.

Re: First Guitar Build
Welcome Leigh...Very impressive indeed for a first build....I'd be surprised if you had no previous experience in woodworking though.
I really like the shape...can you tell us what it is? It looks a little bit OM and a little bit classical...would love to know...

He Leigh, that's very tidy indeed. Not easy to get a rosette that well done the first time around, or the tenth for that matter.

Re: First Guitar Build
Leigh, that looks really well made to me, very clean work. You definitely raise the bar for first builders.

Re: First Guitar Build
Thank you for the kind and supportive comments.
Here are the details:
The back and sides are East Indian Rosewood and the top is Alaskan Sitka Spruce.
I drew up my own plans for the guitar. The body design is an original. I used a program I downloaded from the internet called G Thang. The program uses the five arc, three straight line segment model or a seven arc, three straight line segment model. I used graph paper to draw up a full size body design using the mathematical information from the program.
I have had no previous experience in woodworking at all. I did an electrical apprenticeship (over 30 years ago) but didn’t like the work. I was addicted to guitar so I did a degree in music and then a post grad in education.
Kind Regards
Leigh

Re: First Guitar Build
Well I am surprised Leigh... you are a natural woodworker...you obviously have very good attention to detail in all things and it carries over into your new found interest...Lutherie, Thats great.
The shape is very pleasing to the eye...perhaps you could post some plans or details in the plans section as I am sure that there would be others that would like to build it! It is very sweet!

really beautiful work Leigh, although I think you might be missing bits - although I do like minimalist look you are going for :p
Re: First Guitar Build
Nice work Leigh. She's a fat bottomed OM. I like it. You have a great eye for design. And for a non-woodworker, you've done great work.
What are your plans for the neck? Bolt-on, bolt-on mortise and tenon, dovetail?

I think I will take the easier option and try a bolt on mortice and tenon joint.

Re: First Guitar Build
You don't have to have a tenon for your joint. Mario Proulx does a bolt-on butt join. Mario is a mechanical engineer if memory serves and can be anal about certain things. He's more than satisfied with it.
