Wow, interesting. Wonder if Chilton's is going to follow suit.
Re: Thought these guys only did car manuals
The book's not too bad but the chapter on changing the oil in your Strat is a bit weird.

Hendrix obviously didn't follow the book when re-wiring his stat.
Or maybe he used over sized spark plugs!

Re: Thought these guys only did car manuals
Need one of these! I think the clutch is about to go on my one
.
Haynes are doing all sorts of manuals now, I think with the advent of modern computerised engines your average home handyman doesn't want to or can't strip an engine down in 15 minutes anymore so they (Haynes) are coming up with 'other avenues' to sell manuals. They have one out about babies for dads, based on a complete strip down & rebuild

I also have one of these suckers

Re: Thought these guys only did car manuals
Daniel, The Haynes manual is average...there may be better books around.

Thanks Martin, that is really nice of you to point that out. I really just want because it is by haynes and I have spent hours with them trying to fix my cars. I like the synergy.

I agree Daniel, I might add a Tele one to my Xmas list as I prefer to drive a Tele. Thanks for pointing these out Martin.

I got my manual from Dymocks here in Adelaide...better be quick before they go the way of Borders and a few other book chains.

Jim,
I have the tele book and while as a teleholic it is a requirement to own everything even remotely tele related, I dont rate the book that highly.
A short synopsis as follows of its 194 + pages
0 -9 foreword etc
10 -17 describe a tele and how to buy one (wont need that will you , you can make one!!
)
18 -29 "Know your vintage tele, american standard", etc etc
30 - 43 set up and tuning, but all pretty standard stuff
44 - 101 repairs and maintenance - fairly useful
102 - 161 - "case studies" - talks about differnt teles such as the chinese made classic 50s tele reissue vibe squier, an enthralling description of avril lavignes tele - oh boy!. etc etc
162 - 181 The people who use them, including a range of yankee chicken pickers whose main aim in life seemed to be to make the tele sound as much like a banjo as possible, and a couple of bluesmen from the deep south (Sutton and Dartford, respectively) Messrs J. Beck and K. Richards.
So overall an entertaining read and it has lots of nice colour pictures of naked teles which is of course very cool.
But if you want to look after or set up your basic plank and wire combo, then I think Dan Erlewines guitar repair book is much better value.

Wow! there is pages in it too. Thanks Richard but I was only interested in that front cover sitting on a shelf as a bit of kitsch Tele kit.

Re: Thought these guys only did car manuals
Looks like they don't have it Martin and they list the Strat one as unavailable too.

And this is whats wrong with these book chains. They only stock one of each book and only reorder when someone buys it. This is what happens when book shops are run by finance companies who try and run the shop like a supermarket....it doesnt work.DarwinStrings wrote:Looks like they don't have it Martin and they list the Strat one as unavailable too.

I see where you are coming from Jim, in which case, you will LOVE this book.
I got mine from Amazon - if you are going to wait for it to be ordered, you might as well do it yourself, I reckon!
Cheers m'dears
