The fires are in the hills around Perth...big and bad with the winds pushing embers 500 meters ahead of the front. The size of the blaze makes it impossible for the fire fighters because when they are that big, they make their own wind. At 8pm, the choppers that have been guiding the fight will be grounded as it is just too dark to fly in safety. At the same time the weather dept is predicting the wind, which have been cause of this disaster throughout the day, are set to increase in strength significantly...me, I am on the coast so I will be fine, same deal with Tim, he is in an area close to Perth that is not under any real threat, but the poor bastards up in the hills and on many fronts are in for a terrible night.

Not cheery at all. Aussies are good people but mother nature seems to have decided to kick the b'geezus out of this country of late...think most people would have had enough of the bad news by now and feel that these natural disasters can just piss off when ever they're ready :|

Been there, done that, got the desert to prove it.

There is vid at this link showing some of the fire earlier last night....hear the wind and know why they can't control the front.

Shhhhh...the last thing that we need is for someone to start throwing in fresh suggestions while Mother Nature is considering her next move. :D

Lillian -
Strangely enough we were expecting locust plagues in Victoria this year. They had just started moving when the rains came so I think we drowned them off (until next year at least) :D

Mother nature sure has got a dodgy stomach at the moment, we're still getting 4.7 magnitude aftershocks just to keep us on our toes but she sure has it in for you aussies! Hope it settles down for you guys just to give you a chance to catch your breath....before the insurance companies whack you with increased premiums.

Crap! Sorry Steve, wasn't trying to slip one into the suggestion box there.

Look, I understand that there is a price for living in Paradise, but you might want to check your contract again. I think your premiums are getting rather steep. There should be a limit on the number of natural disasters in a 12 month time period with a mandatory cooling off period.

In the mean time, y'all need to be tracking down whom ever is pissing Mother Nature off and force him/her to apologize.

Last I heard, 41 homes have been destroyed. On the local radio they have just issued mandatory evacuation orders for still more areas of the hills. It is still very windy ATM but it has died down considerably from the 75 knot gusts reported yesterday. The wind is expected to drop down quite a bit by midday WST. Will only be a short reprieve though because strong easterly winds (warm dry air from the centre), with gusts of 50 knots, are predicted for most of this coming week......would love some rain. :(

Fae just let me know that her sister had to evacuate and her house was saved by a helicopter dropping it's load of water on the place.
