Mighty Uke on ABC1

Post by Mike Thomas » Sun Jan 09, 2011 12:55 pm

Just noticed that on ABC1 from 3 - 4.20 p.m. eastern time today (Sunday 9th) there is a documentary about how the "ukelele is conquering the world". May be worth getting out of the shed for.

It's an amazing documentary, featuring James Hill & Anne Davison who were the headline act at the Cairns Uke Festival in July 2010. The movie is available on DVD in case you missed the broadcast on 9 January.

Here's the trailer ...

I really enjoyed it.

Here's a video of one of the bands featured. Boulder Acoustic Society:

Also, Aaron Keim, who is in the band, builds nice little banjo ukes

I watched a video where he talks and demonstrates how he built up the skills and technique to do that song. It's just amazing that all those sounds come from a uke with apparently so little effort on his part. He makes it look easy but every time I see and hear it I'm just in awe. Even watching and listening to how he layers the sounds I can hardly believe it.

Playing a James Hill Signature Model ukulele worth over USD$3,000 certainly helps. I'd reckon there are multiple pick-ups inside which accentuate particular percussive effects, and I'm sure he has some of his riffs running on a loop via a foot-switch. Needless to say, the guy is a genius player.
