Source - Blonde De Waxed Shellac

Post by Kim Strode » Fri Jan 07, 2011 9:47 am

Hi all, I have been trying to find a retailer in Australia for de waxed blonde shellac and I am a little confused by some of the commentary, which perhaps could clarified. I initially have a small project and do not want to pay the freight to bring it in from OS.

Most of what I've read says the best quality shellac should be mixed from powder just prior to use. However http://www.ubeaut.com.au/ indicates blonde shellac is hard to mix and should only be purchased pre-mixed as a prepared product.

Some years ago my daughter purchased an un-finished violin which I initially just polished with a wax finish. Last year she cleaned all the wax off and I attempted to a french polish using Rustins White Polish. I made a terrible job of it and am now in deeps sh...! with my daughter.

I now need to rectify the mess and need a source of shellac to finish the project. Thanks, Kim

Hi Kim,
There's a whole heap of stuff to be found here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=879, and ringing endorsements for a local supplier here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1495. The dewaxed shellac is on page 19 of the 'Restoration Hardware' catalogue.
Good luck,
Steve

One source of quality blonde shellac in Melbourne is St. Lukes art shop in Smith St., just about next door to Alex Grant's violin shop. (26 Smith St., Collingwood). They sell Langridge blonde shellac in fine granule form, in small quantities. It is comparatively expensive, but you don't have to buy much. I have had no problem in dissolving it, and if you leave it for a few days before using it, any sediment/wax sinks to the bottom of the jar, leaving a beautifully clear shellac solution.
