Hey Pete. Could you take a finished ebony bridge pin and put it in the chuck of a lathe then drill a little hole in the knob-end and glue in a little dot. I don't know diddly squat about wood turning though. Maybe I just showed that with the suggestion.

Yep that should work. Good idea, did not think of that. Probably would not be perfectly centred, but should be good enough.

Peter , I've done them in the drillpress . I didn't inlay shell in these ones ( brass and Ebony ) but the idea remains the same.

I've drilled a hole ( smaller than the pin) in the middle of the vice wooden jaws . Align this hole to the chuck with the drill bit. That will centre your hole in the pin ,but be aware a pin with a cranky grain is liable to throw things out a little. prick a mark dead centre on the pin and it may help. Use a Brad point bit

Actually from my undstanding of the rules, mammoth ivory is not ok. It is subject to the same rules.

In reality I suspect it has something to do with the 'environmental' damage that is done by those who harvest the material, "illegally"......after all, we would not want those vagabonds stumbling across a significant find and taking credit when there are so many 'qualified' paleontologists waiting in line to do a dig and make the name for themselves that will allow them to sit on their arses doing sweet FA for the rest of their working life except flying all over the globe fully funded to attend countless conferences where they will take their duty of talk down the achievements of lesser men very seriously...That's the sort of thing that could screw their environment completely.

Got my endpins and bridgepins with Paua Abalone dots, about 10 years supply. Gurian instruments package arrived yesterday, package from LMI arrived about a week ago. So they are still getting through US Customs. Get em while it still lasts.
