Here's where I'm at with the Ziricote 0-18.

These fine pieces of timber came from Bob Cefalu and will be matched with one of his Italian Spruce tops.

This one is a keeper.

This is going to get some of the Black/Red/Black purfling that's on the way from Gurian. Side purfs as well.

Blackwood bindings. I can't decide whether to use curly or plain.

Any thoughts?

There's probably enough going on with that Ziricote to use plain bindings.

The curly would probably look good too but I'm not sure if it'll get too busy and detract from the main event.

Wow, fantastic look. Newb question, looks like you ripped and laminated 60mm sections. Is that correct?

Id go plain bindings, there is a lot happening there, but then I havent seen the timber for the soundboard.

My feeling would be for the curly bindings. I think the shimmer that you would get would set things off quite nicely. They're going to be small so won't overpower the overall package.

The BRB purfs are going to look great too.

That's looking great. Something like curly koa bindings woood look fabulous so I suspect curly blackwood would look great too. If you had trimmed bindings off the side pieces of the ziricote these would look fabulous with side and top purflings too.

I actually got really crapped off with that bugger Kim grabbing all the good stuff at the last OLF swap meet so when Bob C listed that Ziricote set late in proceedings I only bought it so Kim couldn't get his grubby mitts on it.

Sebastiaan, it does look that way, but somehow, the tree grows those spider-web whorls and grows a relatively straight grain line every so often too. Ziricote is absolutely one of the most beautiful timbers on the planet. The Bob's have quite a tag team going on this one: Bob discovered and expertly milled this set from out of a board, and Bob is making that set into an object worthy of a art gallery with the potential to sing sweetly. I'm convinced that this is the highest use of this precious resource. Way to go, Bob and Bob!

Not trying to steal your thunder Bob.

Here's a pic of a ziricote guitar built buy Dennis Scannel http://www.truenorthguitars.com. He's a great builder with a very good eye for the asthetic. This guitar uses the best set of ziricote I've seen. I only post this so you can get an idea of using fairly plain looking wood as binding. There's just too much going on with the ziricote (IMHO) to use highly figured bindings.

I think I've actually bought the sister set to yours!

I was thinking (if the width of the sides permit it, and the thickness) to cut up some binding from the sides and just use a bold b/w/b purfling to set everything appart... Still wondering what to do with the end-graft, though...

Al it would be interesting, at least to me, to move the body to the top of the plates and then cut out the sap wood that is not in the body profile and use it, in it's original shape, as the end graft.

And you know me - I like binding highly figured guitars in the same wood as the sides - Stealth bindings. Dip it in ziricote I say!!!!
