I've been using 1/4-20 lag/hanger bolts (screw one end, thread the other) that I screw into a 13mm dowel that runs the full length of the heal and I only use a very short tenon. Cheers

Dom - I am unsure about the screw/dowel attachment. Are you saying you just screw the thread directly into the wood of the dowel after sinking in the heel, or is there a concealed nut embedded in the back of the dowel before you sink it?

Frank, no hidden inserts, the screw end is simply screwed into the dowel. The dowel gives the hanger bolts some side grain to bite into and hold the thread. This is a very strong joint but you need to carefully pre-drill so you don't split the heel.

The dowel also helps strengthen the heel block area.

Cheers

Dom,

The writer/editor in me can't help but change "heal" to "heel"...

Sorry, mate, but that just gets under my skin worse than visions of sheep and chaps...and that's already not a pretty thing...
