#2 Got some Finish

Post by WaddyT » Thu Jun 25, 2009 2:30 am

Well, here is my second guitar, after many new learning experiences on making V-joints, replacing rosettes, replacing the back, etc., and etc.

1973 Romanillos plan
EIR / German Spruce
Lace Wood bindings
Ebony Fingerboard
Cocobolo Bridge
Gilbert Tuning Machines
Mahogany V-joint neck with Sp. Cedar Head

This one sounds better than #1. It has a fuller bass, and still maintains the complex highs, which I like. Very even sound across and up and down the fingerboard, all the way to the 20th fret on the high E. It still has a lot of playing in to go, as it only has about 6 or 7 hours of playing on it so far. I'll try to get a "Ringer" to make me a sound clip, as you don't want to listen to my playing.

Thanks for looking. I know some of you have already seen it.

Thanks for posting that here Waddy. We don't get to seen enough Classicals, and yours certainly are inspirational. Your rosettes make me scratch my head and wonder at the hours it takes to pull something like that off.

Thank you, Allen. It does take some time, especially when you have to do it over several times to get it right.

Very nice Waddy, I've said it before but worth say again that I think your headstock design is superb. The attention to detail in this guitar really does give it that 'craftsman' built appeal and there is nothing not to like about it.

Well Done! Hope to hear the ringer soon. 8)

Cheers

Me likeee :cl :cl :cl Love the colour contrasts you have going on with the different timbers there Waddy, beeeeautiful.
Do you think the Romanillos bracing gives it that fuller bass over, say, a Torres or did it just work out that way & the magic is in the wood and construction ?

Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.

Bob, it sounds great, to me. Much bigger than the first one.

Martin, I did pore fill with pumice, and it needs a bit more to close a few scattered pores that didn't fill.

Nick, the Romanillos design is pretty much a variation on the Torres design, but with more of an open upper bout. I think the bigger bass comes from the thinner top, but apparently I was able to brace enough stiffness into it to maintain the trebles. Probably just luck.

Thanks to all of you for your comments.

Waddy, Very nice strong full sound, The bass is very good and full of tone.

I have not yet made a classical or flamenco but it is on the do list. Did you stick to a standard bracing plan or have you made your own variance on it.
Cheers

Waddy bro congrats man! :cl :cl :cl :cl :cl :cl

I spent some time looking at the pics and I really like what I see. As previously mentioned your treatment of the headstock is just killer cool! The rosette also rocks and the finish has a great shine too.

Overall this is a great guitar even if it was a 20th!

Interestingly I often read that builders can get through one of two guitars and then the next one is a problem child. My third was that way for and it fought me every step of the way. Makes me wonder why this is. In my case on my third I tried a bunch of new things (for me....) and that is what gave me problems. Do you have any idea why this one fought you, and lost.... since it turned out very cool anyway?

Great guitar Waddy!!!

Thanks you two!

Richard, that sound clip is from #1, not #2. This one is better. I used the Romanillos layout for the braces, with the open Tonne Bars and finger braces in the upper bout. The lower bout is domed at 25', and is tapered down about 5mm from the waist to the widest part of the lower bout, putting a little additional stress on the top. This makes for a very lively top.

Hesh, I appreciate your comments. Your attention to detail, makes me feel inadequate, but I appreci8ate what you said. I think the mistakes come from the thoughts like, "I've done this before, why not try this!", or rushing through a process because the steps are familiar. I found that I need to slow myself down from time to time, when doing those tasks that, so as not to make mistakes.

Hi Waddy,
Great guitar.... Love the rosette, contrasting timbers and that very nice looking german spruce top (much better grain lines than one I got locally for a small fortune). A very classy classical, well done.

Cheers

Hi Waddy,

Dont know why you havent been banned for that one mate, Mods must be getting soft because its a classical or something.

Simply beautiful, something to aspire to,
